Are the RAF likely to accept aircrew candidates having had LASIK or PRK eye surgery in the near future?
I am a member of the UAS and all I have ever wanted to do is become an RAF fast-jet pilot. I am slightly short-sighted which disqualifies me from applying to OASC for aircrew. This is extremely frustrating for me. If LASIK or PRK surgery was accepted then I would take it immediately. Since the USAF and NASA have both agreed that if successful, it will be fine for aircrew, and are actually encouraging some of there current pilots to take the procedure to enhance their abilities. Does anyone know if th RAF are likely to allow candidates for aircrew to have the LASIK or PRK procedures prior to entry?
Hi,
Baffles me no end why people put such a question to Joe Public when the RAF/MOD or even their websites could have provided the answer. But to save you the effort, yes you can have LVC prior to joining the RAF. However there are limitations on your pre-op refraction depending on the precise position you want to attain. There are also restrictions post op, some require a 6 month recovery period before active service can re-commence.
Ultimately you will need to check with the RAF as to the exact pre and post op requirements and then check with an LVC provider if you are going to fall within guidelines.
